- MUSIC- Traditionally in Thriller's eery music is used in the opening sequence, as well as setting the mood and tone of the film. The soundtrack also gives the audience an understanding of which genre the film shall be. Music can also be used to forshadow events which are about to take place.
(The soundtrack to Psycho demonstrates this convention adapted into a thriller film)
- MENTIONING THE PRODUCTION COMPANIES-
- MENTION OF DIRECTOR AND ACTORS-
In Psycho a mention of the protagonist 'Janet Leigh' and Director 'Alfred Hitchcock' is displayed which is essential as it shows who created the film and who is starring in it and if they are a well-known celebrity, cast lists may aso be incuded in the opening titles.
- SETTING- Iconic buildings are normally used in opening titles, which immediately set the scene and especially in Thrillers the scenery can imply the mass amount of people that may be affected, as well as providing their National Identity. The Taking of Pelham 123 is a film which uses the skyscrapers in New York to state their location.
- CAMERA SHOTS- In the opening titles for Unknown the "classic Hollywood opening" is used which features a Extreme Long Shot, Longshot, Mid Shot and Mid Close Up, which are primarily used to show a charater's perspective and the entire setting and how it adapts the charatcer within it.
LS- Begins to show the interior of the aeroplane window and where the character is placed.
MS- Moving more inside the aeroplane away from the wider perspective.
MCU- Showing the central character in his environment.
- PACE- The pace of a thriller is predominantly fast paced to show the hectic situations being witnessed. This is shown by the fast paced editing show in The Taking of Pelham 123, which shows another convention of a thriller opening.
All of these factors are aspects which contribute in dictating the genre of the film and forming the atmosphere around it.
